ACA 5 will be on the ballot in California this November. This is important because it will remove the harmful, discriminatory, and unconstitutional language of the 2008 Proposition 8.
ACA 5 means we will not rely on court rulings for equality. Instead, our state's and our constitution's laws will be free of discrimination.
This vote is crucial after the Trump administration reconstituted the Supreme Court and the subsequent targeted rulings that specifically aim at LGBT persons from unrelated issues. Voting is important to ensure constitutional rights are enumerated for all persons in California.
In 2023, the Placer Democratic Central Committee voted to endorse ACA 5, an era in which LGBT rights have also been officially added to the democratic platform. It sent multiple letters of support to elected officials in our state. Equal Rights are a democratic value.
In this pivotal presidential election, voting is important because this is a highlighted partisan issue, mainly because judicial rulings have vertical precedents. Without support, many critical civil rights and civil liberties rulings can be overturned without the vote of the people, Congress, or legislatures.
