April and Spring Showers

April follows what has been a wet, windy, snowy and ‘fallen trees’ late winter this year.  This is good news for the drought conditions and the snow pack may extend the winter sports season by months!

The weather is not the only thing acting like climate change in our area.  I hope most of our readers are aware of the political changes and controversies taking place at our local school boards.  Book banning and stigmatizing of the LGBTQIA and their allies in our community have caused a great deal of pain and community upheaval.  I encourage individuals to take action in line with our democratic values by attending school board meetings and communicating with board members by letter/phone/email.

Many of the loudest voices are attempting to impose their values based on their religious beliefs on the entire school system.  That is not freedom.  Our country was founded by those escaping religious persecution and the separation of church and state is a foundational pillar of our Constitution.  Please be a voice supporting inclusive and diverse books in our school curriculum as well as speaking up against the baseless accusations of the LGBTQIA community and their allies during public comment timeslots at local school boards.  If you wish to join others in this advocacy, please contact one of our local clubs already working in their local districts. Roseville Junction and Placer Women Democrats are good places to start.  Now is the time to start identifying possible school board candidates who share our values.

Speaking of possible candidates leads me to Fundraising, using that famous phrase “The mother’s milk of politics”! Last month I advised you to save the date of Saturday, June 10, for the annual Roosevelt Kennedy dinner at Sun City Roseville Timbers.  I am now pleased to share that we have confirmed Congresswoman Katie Porter as our keynote speaker! This will be a wonderful opportunity to hear directly from one of the candidates running for Federal Senate to replace retiring Senator Feinstein.  Invitations to speak have been issued to Adam Schiff and Barbara Lee, who have also announced intentions to run, but they have not confirmed their attendance.  Ticket sales are brisk so please do not wait because we expect a sellout event. You may order tickets through Act Blue at this link: https://secure.actblue.com/donate2023-rkd
If you are unable to attend but wish to support the fundraiser, there is a box at the end to make a one-time donation.

Stay tuned for more information on where you can plug in! Feel free to let me know your ideas at chair.pcdp@gmail.com.  Your volunteer time to organize these activities would be very helpful!
