TYRANNY Part 11

Editor’s note: this is the eleventh in a series of summaries based on author and professor of history, Timothy Snyder’s book “On Tyranny”. The goal is to pass on his insights, wisdom and forecast to those who have not read his works.

 Contribute to Good Causes

“Be active in organizations, political or not, that express your own view of life…Then you have made a free choice that supports civil society and helps others to do good.”

Snyder reminds us of the good works done by charities, harkening back to the “thousand points of light”. You have obviously chosen to be a participant in a political party/organization where members can lend their efforts as much, or as little, as makes them comfortable. While participating/working within these activities we “are creating civil society”.

Working with others teaches or reminds us we can expand our circle of friends/acquaintances, learning from others. “Democratic politics become more plausible and attractive…in the twentieth century, all the major enemies of freedom were hostile to non-governmental organizations, charities and the like…Today’s authoritarians are highly allergic to the idea of free associations and non-governmental organizations”.

Watching as our newly installed Republican Congress flexes its’ muscles, there will likely be ample opportunities for us to gather with others to let them know how we feel about women’s rights to govern their own bodies, gun control, fair and safe elections…and more.
