A Message from Our Chair Kathleen Crawford

May 2023

Mothers’ Day, CADEM Convention and looking ahead to June 10 –
Katie Porter keynote speaker!

May has so many events keeping us busy! In addition to Mothers’ Day (May 14), the CADEM convention (May 25-28) and Memorial Day (May 29), there are graduations and weddings for many families and associates. Locally, there are two events on the weekend of May 20/21 including the Auburn Home Show and Pride Celebration in Roseville at Royer Park which will keep our Event volunteers very busy as well.

Sticking with the politics for this article, I begin with the CADEM convention at the Los Angeles Convention Center beginning on Thursday May 25 through Sunday May 28. The Central Committee delegates are getting their registrations, hotel and flight arrangements made so that Placer County is well represented.  If you wish to attend as an observer or volunteer, please go to this link https://cdpconvention.org/ for further information. As it gets closer, the agenda will fill in with more details including the scheduling of the many caucuses and topics for the General Sessions. There will be elections for CADEM Secretary and Controller as well as the Regional Directors. It is a great opportunity to see our party in action as we lean into the theme “Don’t Agonize, Organize!” The convention dinner keynote speaker is our own former Speaker of the House, Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi who will bring us the latest information from Washington DC.

Many of our activists remain committed to being a voice supporting inclusive and diverse books in our school curriculum as well as speaking up against the baseless accusations of the LGBTQIA community and their allies during public comment timeslots at local school boards. If you wish to join others in this advocacy, please contact one of our local clubs already working in their local districts. Now is the time to start identifying possible school board candidates who share our values.

Two local events are happening the weekend of May 20/21. Joe Mlakar and the Events Committee are representing us over 2 days at the Auburn Home Show. The Placer Action Network Club has agreed to staff the one-day Pride Celebration event on Saturday May 20 at Royer Park in Roseville. Becoming more visible at these local events helps to raise awareness of our Democratic values and raises our profile as active participants in our community. Drop by these events to support our volunteers!

Looking ahead to the Roosevelt Kennedy dinner on June 10 at 5:30 pm at the Timbers in Roseville Sun City, there has been a great deal of excitement about welcoming Congresswoman Katie Porter as our keynote speaker! This will be an excellent opportunity to hear directly from one of the candidates running for Federal Senate to replace retiring Senator Feinstein. Ticket sales are brisk – over 230 tickets were sold as of 4/18/23.  Please do not procrastinate because we expect a sellout event and may soon cease ticket sales because the room capacity is 300. You may order tickets through Act Blue at this link: https://secure.actblue.com/donate/2023-rkd If you are unable to attend but wish to support the fundraiser, there is a box at the end to make a one time donation.
Stay tuned for more information on where you can plug in! Feel free to let me know your ideas at chair.pcdp@gmail.com.  Your volunteer time to organize these activities would be very helpful!
