A Message from Our Chair Kathleen Crawford

September 2023

Political heat from multiple indictments (are we still on 4??) as well adding named co-conspirators has drowned out all the important good news promoting President Biden’s policies and programs that impact the middle class and protect our democracy.

What happened in our positive and educational Central Committee activities in August?

MESSAGING MATTERS!

Our PCDP Central Committee has approved a new messaging strategy based on a 3V Framework:

  • Lead with shared VALUES (not policy and NOT a response to Republican talking points)

  • Name the VILLAIN(s), attribute their motivation & call out deliberate actions

  • Offer a shared VISION that, by coming together, we can achieve

We'll include one example each month in this newsletter. Look for our messages in official communications and on social media. Please share them whenever you see them.

We are heartbroken seeing the loss of life and the destruction of entire communities in Maui. Our planet is fragile and is screaming at us to do a better job of protecting it. Our efforts to shift away from using fossil fuels have been too slow and too small. MAGA Republicans like Kevin Kiley block efforts to make changes at every turn, placing their own greed above everything, including human survival. They enable wealthy and powerful corporations, keeping us on this perilous path towards destruction. We must choose leaders who prioritize restoring the health of our planet by transitioning to earth-friendly lifestyles, protecting our environment for future generations. We cannot get off the current perilous path if Republicans hold the power to keep us there. Democrats are willing and able to make the critical changes.

A Message from Our Chair

The heat in July was more than just weather! There was plenty of political heat as well on both the state and national levels. We go from week to week wondering which indictments might happen in which order and then, a new shoe drops!

What will August hold for us?

Affirmative Action: It’s Not What the Extreme Right Makes It Out to Be

In college admissions or jobs . . .. it’s about addressing systemic discrimination
Myra Jolivet

Here’s the definition of affirmative action: Affirmative action is defined as a set of procedures designed to; eliminate unlawful discrimination among applicants, remedy the results of such prior discrimination, and prevent such discrimination in the future. Applicants may be seeking admission to an educational program or looking for professional employment.

So logically, those against affirmative action are pro unlawful discrimination, against remedies for that discrimination, and for future discrimination.

On Tyranny Part 14

On Tyranny….Timothy Snyder

Editor’s note: this is the fourteenth in a series of summaries based on author and professor of history, Timothy Snyder’s book “On Tyranny”. The goal is to pass on his insights, wisdom and forecast to those who have not read his works.

In previous monthly issues, we’ve brought you highlights from the notable book by Timothy Snyder, “On Tyranny – twenty lessons from the twentieth century”. This month’s chapter is so topical it’s frightening as it lays out how a tyrant choreographed and succeeded in creating fascism in the middle of Europe as the world watched and did little to stop it as it grew throughout the world.

A Message from Our Chair

I am still basking in the success of our Tenth Annual Roosevelt Kennedy dinner and the inspirational words of our special guest, Congresswoman Barbara Lee and key note speaker, Congresswoman Katie Porter. It was wonderful selling out the 300 seat capacity of the Timbers Ballroom 3 weeks in advance.  Looking out on the audience from the stage was energizing and hopeful that Democrats are ready to step up and elect more Democrats in our county.  Thank you is not quite enough to recognize the work of our Fundraising Committee chaired by Susan Gutowsky.  The mighty committee of 5 Central Committee members and volunteers recruited fantastic speakers, recruited sponsors, monitored Act Blue reservations, worked with the catering staff, gathered additional fundraising items for the Wine & Chocolate pulls and created a wonderful evening!
