September 2023
Political heat from multiple indictments (are we still on 4??) as well adding named co-conspirators has drowned out all the important good news promoting President Biden’s policies and programs that impact the middle class and protect our democracy.
What happened in our positive and educational Central Committee activities in August?
Kevin Kiley is NOT Kenough
We may be counting down to the first day of Fall, but the local political activities are still red hot. The Kick Out Kiley rally and letter writing campaign was a huge success—in his latest fundraising letter, Kiley used our efforts as an example of what he’s facing. THANK YOU to all who participated.
Let’s keep this energy going. We are still phone banking to reach voters in CD3 and plan to begin voter pledge canvasses in the coming months. Your participation in these activities is crucial to reaching our goals. You can stay in the loop on all our activities by joining our Outreach Circle. This LINKTREE has all the details you need to know.
Don’t agonize—ORGANIZE!
The mission of the Placer County Democratic Party Community Engagement Committee is to organize, promote, and facilitate activities that inform and engage the voters of Placer County as we establish and sustain core democratic values—one voter, one issue, and one election at a time.

The Fate of the Republic
How’s that for a ponderous title?
There cannot be too many people drawing a breath in these United States who are not contemplating whether our form of government will survive Donald Trump. We are legion, I suspect, and our trepidations are not unjustified. While the former president runs around social media and his rallies of cultists by complaining the government is being weaponized against him, he finishes his whining by explaining how he intends to turn the institutions of our republic into weapons of mass destruction to be used on anyone who resists his authority.
Our national destiny now is connected to how many people find emotional and political sanctuary in the delusions of a pathological liar.

ACA 5 (Assembly Constitutional Amendment 5) Marriage Equality
ACA 5 passed the California State Senate on July 13, 2023 and it was chaptered and filed the same month. Now it must pass the popular vote, as it will be on the November 5, 2024, General Election Ballot. This will remove discrimination from the state constitution.

Our PCDP Central Committee has approved a new messaging strategy based on a 3V Framework:
Lead with shared VALUES (not policy and NOT a response to Republican talking points)
Name the VILLAIN(s), attribute their motivation & call out deliberate actions
Offer a shared VISION that, by coming together, we can achieve
We'll include one example each month in this newsletter. Look for our messages in official communications and on social media. Please share them whenever you see them.
We are heartbroken seeing the loss of life and the destruction of entire communities in Maui. Our planet is fragile and is screaming at us to do a better job of protecting it. Our efforts to shift away from using fossil fuels have been too slow and too small. MAGA Republicans like Kevin Kiley block efforts to make changes at every turn, placing their own greed above everything, including human survival. They enable wealthy and powerful corporations, keeping us on this perilous path towards destruction. We must choose leaders who prioritize restoring the health of our planet by transitioning to earth-friendly lifestyles, protecting our environment for future generations. We cannot get off the current perilous path if Republicans hold the power to keep us there. Democrats are willing and able to make the critical changes.
Our Central Committee Statement regarding The Landing Spot
Fellow Democrats,
Conservatives are once again attacking educational and LGBTQ spaces in Roseville and Placer County. The Landing Spot was forced to cancel their annual youth drag show, which was scheduled to be at Roseville High School, due to pressure from the Destiny Church backed organization, the American Council.

The heat in July was more than just weather! There was plenty of political heat as well on both the state and national levels. We go from week to week wondering which indictments might happen in which order and then, a new shoe drops!
What will August hold for us?
Affirmative Action: It’s Not What the Extreme Right Makes It Out to Be
In college admissions or jobs . . .. it’s about addressing systemic discrimination
Myra Jolivet
Here’s the definition of affirmative action: Affirmative action is defined as a set of procedures designed to; eliminate unlawful discrimination among applicants, remedy the results of such prior discrimination, and prevent such discrimination in the future. Applicants may be seeking admission to an educational program or looking for professional employment.
So logically, those against affirmative action are pro unlawful discrimination, against remedies for that discrimination, and for future discrimination.

It's can be difficult to muster the energy to engage voters during the dog days of August, but you can beat the heat and still be active when you volunteer to make calls using our direct dialer. We are contacting infrequent Democratic voters to survey them about the issues of importance to them. The more contacts we make, the more voters we can reactivate for the 2024 cycle. Every vote counts. Sign up HERE.
Our next community outreach will be the debut of our Donuts with the Dems events. Our first event will be Saturday, August 5th from 9:00-10:30 AM. Come for donuts, find out about upcoming events, and share your thoughts about important issues of the day. Members of the Placer Advocates for Students and Families will be on hand to talk about our local school boards and how we can organize to support our students and families.
RSVP here.

On Tyranny….Timothy Snyder
Editor’s note: this is the fourteenth in a series of summaries based on author and professor of history, Timothy Snyder’s book “On Tyranny”. The goal is to pass on his insights, wisdom and forecast to those who have not read his works.
In previous monthly issues, we’ve brought you highlights from the notable book by Timothy Snyder, “On Tyranny – twenty lessons from the twentieth century”. This month’s chapter is so topical it’s frightening as it lays out how a tyrant choreographed and succeeded in creating fascism in the middle of Europe as the world watched and did little to stop it as it grew throughout the world.

I am still basking in the success of our Tenth Annual Roosevelt Kennedy dinner and the inspirational words of our special guest, Congresswoman Barbara Lee and key note speaker, Congresswoman Katie Porter. It was wonderful selling out the 300 seat capacity of the Timbers Ballroom 3 weeks in advance. Looking out on the audience from the stage was energizing and hopeful that Democrats are ready to step up and elect more Democrats in our county. Thank you is not quite enough to recognize the work of our Fundraising Committee chaired by Susan Gutowsky. The mighty committee of 5 Central Committee members and volunteers recruited fantastic speakers, recruited sponsors, monitored Act Blue reservations, worked with the catering staff, gathered additional fundraising items for the Wine & Chocolate pulls and created a wonderful evening!
